The Equivalent Refraction Index for the Acoustic Scattering by Many Small Obstacles: with Error Estimates

چکیده
Let M be the number of bounded and Lipschitz regular obstacles Dj , j := 1, ...,M having a maximum radius a, a << 1, located in a bounded domain Ω of R. We are concerned with the acoustic scattering problem with a very large number of obstacles, as M := M(a) := O(a−1), a → 0, when they are arbitrarily distributed in Ω with a minimum distance between them of the order d := d(a) := O(a) with t in an appropriate range. We show that the acoustic farfields corresponding to the scattered waves by this collection of obstacles, taken to be soft obstacles, converge uniformly in terms of the incident as well the propagation directions, to the one corresponding to an acoustic refraction index as a → 0. This refraction index is given as a product of two coefficients C and K, where the first one is related to the geometry of the obstacles (precisely their capacitance) and the second one is related to the local distribution of these obstacles. In addition, we provide explicit error estimates, in terms of a, in the case when the obstacles are locally the same (i.e. have the same capacitance, or the coefficient C is piecewise constant) in Ω and the coefficient K is Hölder continuous. These approximations can be applied, in particular, to the theory of acoustic materials for the design of refraction indices by perforation using either the geometry of the holes, i.e. the coefficient C, or their local distribution in a given domain Ω, i.e. the coefficient K.

Equivalent a posteriori error estimates for spectral element solutions of constrained optimal control problem in one dimension
In this paper, we study spectral element approximation for a constrained optimal control problem in one dimension. The equivalent a posteriori error estimators are derived for the control, the state and the adjoint state approximation. Such estimators can be used to construct adaptive spectral elements for the control problems.
متن کاملEffect of porosity on the characteristics of underwater acoustic sound absorbers using theoretical models
Porous materials have good acoustic damping characteristics over a wide frequency range. As for sound waves, many small-scale pores in the coating materials can convert underwater-coating to rough surfaces. The main property of porous absorbents is their resistance against incident sound wave that leads to damping effect. From a physical point of view, damping occurs due to friction between flu...
متن کاملAcoustic Neurinomas
Acoustic neuromas (AN) are schwann cell-derived tumors that commonly arise from the vestibular portion of the eighth cranial nerve also known as vestibular schwannoma(VS) causes unilateral hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo and unsteadiness. In many cases, the tumor size may remain unchanged for many years following diagnosis, which is typically made by MRI. In the majority of cases the tumor is s...
متن کاملElectromagnetic wave scattering by many small bodies and creating materials with a desired refraction coefficient
Electromagnetic wave scattering by many small particles is studied. An integral equation is derived for the self-consistent field E in a medium, obtained by embedding many small particles into a given region D. The derivation of this integral equation uses a lemma about convergence of certain sums. These sums are similar to Riemannian sums for the integral equation for E. Convergence of these s...
متن کاملRelationship between head wave amplitudes and seismic refraction velocities to detect lateral variation in the refractor
Refractor ambiguities are big problem in seismic refraction method especially in seismic engineering. There can be hidden subsurface geological phenomena such as hidden faults and shear zones which are not simply predicted by the travel-time graph or some geophysical methods. Head wave amplitudes are used to show the resolution of refractor ambiguities and the existence of anisotropy in complex...
